Lovina offers uncrowded beaches, snorkelling, diving, dolphin tours, glorious sunsets, hot springs and waterfalls. Accommodation is available to suit all budgets.
A peaceful alternative to the crowds, traffic and tourist culture of Kuta and Bali’s south-east corner, the stretch of coast known as Lovina consists of a series of connected oceanside villages on Bali’s northern shores. Here uncrowded, dark sand beaches offer calm, clear waters protected by an offshore reef.
The heart of Lovina is Kalibukbuk where can be found the majority of restaurants, shops and bars. 1.5 kilometres (1 mile) to the east is the picturesque fishing village of Anturan and west of Kalibukbuk are the scenic villages of Kaliasem and Temukus.
Things to See and Do in Lovina
- Lovina’s quiet, protected beaches are perfect for gentle swimming or simply relaxing on the sand. Massage services are available.
- Excellent opportunities for diving and snorkelling are available on Lovina’s off-shore reef . There are a number of dive companies in Kalibukbuk and diving tours to Tulamben and Amed, further east, are also on offer.
- One of the highlights of a visit to Lovina is an early morning dolphin watching tour on one of the many outrigger boats which line Lovina’s beaches.
- In the evenings visitors can stroll along Kalibukbuk’s paved beachside path to view the beautiful sunsets and have a drink or meal at one of the many ocean-facing bars and restaurants.
- A short 5 kilometre (3 mile) journey into the hills above Lovina leads to the Banjar hot water springs where visitors can bathe in three thermal swimming pools which flow into each other through the mouths of carved lions. Set in beautifully landscaped gardens, each pool is of a different temperature.
- Approximately 15 kilometres (9 miles) from Lovina are the beautiful Gitgit waterfalls, where visitors can swim in the pool beneath the 50 metre (164 feet) high falls.

- An air-conditioned room with its own bathroom and toilet and with direct access to the beach can often be rented for as little as 15USD per night.
Getting to Lovina
- Lovina is approximately 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Kuta and 10 kilometres (6 miles) west of Singaraja, northern Bali’s main city.
- Lovina can be reached from Kuta by taking a taxi to Denpasar, a bus from Denpasar to Singaraja, and then a bus or bemo to Lovina.
- Driving from Kuta to Lovina takes about about three hours, a journey which passes through Bali’s picturesque central mountains. Hire cars are readily available in Kuta at reasonable prices.
